Legal Action

A broad coalition of faculty, staff, students, and labor unions filed suit against the Trump-Vance administration and senior federal officials, challenging the unlawful termination and withholding of billions in federal research and education funds from the University of California system. The plaintiffs allege that the administration is using financial coercion to impose ideological control over universities, violating the First Amendment, the Administrative Procedure Act, the Spending Clause, and statutory due process protections. They claim the administration’s actions unlawfully punish the UC system for protected expression and seek to force the adoption of policies that suppress academic freedom and diversity. The coalition seeks declaratory and injunctive relief to block the administration from using federal funding threats to compel ideological conformity and to restore unlawfully withheld funds.
