PFLAG v. Trump
Filed in: U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland
Summary
LGBTQIA+ advocacy organizations and a group of transgender individuals, together with their families, filed a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s Executive Order 14187, titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation.” The order directs all institutions receiving federal funding to cease providing gender-affirming care for patients under the age of 19. The plaintiffs in this case are patients who have been denied access to gender-affirming healthcare. They argue the executive order oversteps the authority of the Executive Branch by performing a function delegated to the Legislative Branch, and that it violates the Affordable Care Act and the Public Health Service Act by engaging in gender-based discrimination.
