Legal Action
University of California Student Association v. Carter
Filed in: U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia
Summary
The University of California Student Association, a nonprofit which advocates for undergraduate students in the University of California system, sued the U.S. Department of Education (DoEd) to prevent federal student loan borrowers’ private information from being shared with the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE sought access to DoEd databases containing sensitive financial information about individuals who borrowed student loans from the federal government. The plaintiffs argue the dissemination of private information held by DoEd violates the Administrative Procedure Act and the Privacy Act.
On Apr. 16, 2025, plaintiffs moved to voluntarily dismiss this lawsuit, and the case was terminated.
